  • History buffs will love Liliesleaf Farm which offers visitors an interactive history experience. Liliesleaf farm was key to the military and political policies of the ANC during the apartheid years. Underground meetings were held by prominent leaders of the apartheid struggle including Nelson Mandela, Ruth First, Joe Slovo and other historical figures. The last meeting that took place at Liliesleaf Farm was in 1963, on the 11th of July, which covered the overthrowing of the then apartheid government. A raid took place on this date and many prominent ANC leaders were arrested. This was a huge defeat for the struggle of freedom in SA, and soon thereafter the Rivonia Treason Trial took place which marks an important period in South Africa’s history during the struggle. Liliesleaf is open to the public which is a “must-see” for all South Africans and visitors alike. 
  • Another special spot within arm’s reach to Rivonia is the Mushroom Park – take the kids for a little outing on the swings and grab breakfast at Truffles Restaurant. This well-kept secret right in the heart of Sandton is a little outdoor surprise for city slickers. 

Johannesburg is home to the world’s biggest urban forest – there are pockets of green everywhere, including the Sandton Field and Study Centre where you can take the kids for a pony ride or picnic.
