Tshwane is often overlooked when it comes to ‘big city’ things to see and do. We’re not sure why, because Tshwane is pretty awesome. Yes, it’s not as flashy as Jozi and it’s smaller in size, but there are a number of amazing attractions just waiting to be discovered.

Perhaps you’ve just moved into one of Tshwane’s nano apartments, or maybe you’ve been here a while and you haven’t really explored. It’s time to be a tourist in your own city. Here’s a round-up of our top 5 places in Tshwane (that you probably haven’t visited)…

  1. Pretoria National Botanical Gardens
  2. Recently open again due to the lockdown, this stunning green space in Tshwane is set in 70 hectares of nature. Take in the waterfall and check out the strange plants from Madagascar… No mask, no entry.

Go there: 2 Cussonia Avenue, Brummeria

  3. Pretoria Boeremark
  4. If you’re a morning person then this Tshwane farmer’s market is a must (it opens at 05:30am on a Saturday!). Brush up on your Afrikaans and browse the stalls that sell everything from freshly made vetkoek (done the proper way) to Bakkies the Butcher’s boerewors.

Go there: Pioneer’s Museum Grounds, Keuning Street, Silverton; every Saturday 5:30am to 9:30am

  5. The Voortrekker Monument
  6. When last did you visit this massive, somewhat eerie granite structure? Never? Then it’s time to see what it’s all about. Closed on Mondays, but entrance fees will be half price until the end of February 2021. So now’s your chance.

    Go there: Eeufees Road, Groenkloof

  7. Freedom Park
  8. This memorial to those who fought against apartheid was set up 20 years ago in Tshwane. Open Monday to Sunday, from 8am until 4:30pm. There are guided tours daily at 9am, 12pm and 3pm. Maps are available for self-guided tours.

Go there: Corner Koch Street and 7th Avenue, Salvokop

  9. The Pretoria Art Museum
  10. If you’re into art then why haven’t you been to this museum? Its collection is impressive and its building takes up a whole Tshwane city block. Closed Mondays and public holidays.

    Go there: Wessels Street, Arcadia
