Life after COVID is starting to look up, spring has sprung, and what better time to explore a few outdoor markets that are close to Randburg? While some markets remain closed in level 2, we’ve found three that are back in action.

If you’re living in one of Randburg’s nano apartments or 1-room flats then you’re probably dying to get out and about, and markets tick both the shopping and outdoors boxes. Read on to find out what three of our favourites are…

  1. The Linden Market
  2. Voted as one of South Africa’s top 10 markets, this market usually happens in the beautiful setting of the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia, but the pandemic has put a stop to that. There is good news though: on 26 September, The Linden Market Pop-up Shop is happening.

It’s part of their ‘urban expansion’ (we’re not sure what that means, but it sounds cool), and it’s being held in an amazing space called The Real Mackay. Expect hand-crafted goods, lots of fresh flowers, and great food. R20 to get in (contactless payment only, so leave your cash at home and bring your card). No mask no entry; 9am to 4pm. There’s talk of the annual Linden Market Christmas Edition happening at the end of November at the Botanical Gardens, but nothing confirmed yet.

Find it: The Linden Market Pop-up Shop at 7 Mackay Avenue, Blairgowrie, otherwise at 45 Thomas Bowler Street, Emmarentia

  3. The Rosebank Sunday Market
  4. This market is practically a Jo’burg institution, and it’s not too far from Randburg either. Every Sunday between 9am and 4pm, Rosebank Mall’s rooftop parking space turns into a marketplace. You can find so much here: African arts, gourmet food stalls, car boot sales, vintage clothes, second-hand books, spices, cocktails, organic beauty products… you name it, it’s there.

Find it: Entrances on Baker Street, Bath Avenue and Craddock Avenue, Rosebank

  5. The Green Market
  6. This one’s new and a little… different. If you’re part of the canna-community and 420 tribe then this is where y’all hang out. The Green Market is in neighbouring Melville and happens Sundays from 10am to 3pm. Here you’ll find all things green and goofed: CBD oil, edibles, bongs, seedlings (so you can literally grow your own), and even a mechanical bull (we kid you not). Plus it’s free entry and parking.

Find it: 27 Boxes, 74 4th Avenue, Melville

No need to mission into the Jo’burg CBD or Bryanston for outdoor markets – Randburg and surrounds have you covered. The area also has some great outdoor spaces of its own, and it’s got history.
