Have you ever been to an outdoor Cafe? Maybe you’re new to Tshwane, or perhaps you’re thinking of moving to the country’s capital. Either way, Tshwane has many good things going for it: it’s close to Joburg’s north, it has a number of sightseeing spots, and it has an interesting side. Indulge in one of the many outdoor cafes and events available to all wide-eyed visitors.

Tshwane has some great outdoor cafes as well – you just need to know where to look. If you’re living in one of Tshwane’s bachelor flats or studio apartments there’s even more reason to get outside.

So we’ve put together a quick list of three of our favourites. In these Covid times you can’t be too careful, so any venues that are not indoors are a plus. And, spring is definitely in the air, so what better time to meet up with friends, get some vitamin D, and enjoy good food?

  1. AfroBoer
  2. AfroBoer is a popular spot that’s even won awards. They have a tranquil garden where you can park off on a bench – it really is a hidden gem. You can also pre-order a picnic box before midday for the next day from their Spaza Shoppe (a self-service canteen-store on-site), and they’ll book a bench on your behalf for a date and time that suits you. Their Bakers Café is open daily from 8am until 3:30pm, and the Spaza Shoppe/garden area is open Monday to Sunday from 8am to 4pm.

  3. Rosemary Hill Coffee Shop
  4. This working farm has 5km, 10km, and 33km trails, as well as an on-site cafe which has plenty of tables outside. It can get quite busy on weekends with hikers and mountain-bikers, but it’s a great day out and the perfect place to feel like you’re escaping the city. The cafe is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm; Saturdays and Sundays from 7am to 3pm. Get there early; you won’t regret it.

  5. Blos Café
  6. This chilled space in Faerie Glen is a real find. The restaurant itself is pretty big, and running the back length of the building and fronting is an open-air deck, with a view of a greenbelt. Perfect for sundowners or early morning coffee; it’s heaven here. Open daily from 7am. Booking advised.
